Topo Guide Walks and hikes

12 walks to discover the natural treasures
of Provence in the Sainte-Baume massif

An exceptional natural heritage

In this guide, the Pays d’Aubagne et de l’Étoile offers you a map of the Sainte Baume containing 12 walking itineraries starting from the communes of Auriol, Saint-Zacharie and Cuges-les-Pins. This limestone massif, home toan exceptional natural heritage, is the largest and highest of the Provencal mountain ranges. It straddles the Var and Bouches-du-Rhône departments, stretching almost 14km from east to west.

On its northern flank lies the Sainte-Baume forest and its remarkable beech grove, the last vestige of the forests that covered Provence 100 years ago. Its cliffs hide the grotto of Marie-Madeleine, a popular place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages.

To the south, the vegetation is more arid, typical of Mediterranean forests, with pine, holm oak, arbutus and garrigue.

Along its crests, the Joug de l’Aigle and the Signal des Béguines both rise to 1,148 m, while on the western slopes, the Pic de Bertagne forms a majestic rocky spur towering at 1,042 m.
