Every year in the Bouches-du-Rhône, between May and September, numerous cart processions are held in honour of Saint Eligius. On his death, on the 1st December 659, Eligius was recognised as a Saint and declared the patron saint of goldsmiths and blacksmiths. The carts are decorated with greenery or wheat and are pulled by 20 to 50 draught horses, harnessed in single file. These historic events (records of which have been found as far back as the 17th century) have retained all their rituals...
