In 2011, members of the Rives & Cultures association, which brings together residents of Marseille's eastern suburbs, expressed their desire to enhance the Huveaune and its valley through an artistic commission. Accompanied by the Bureau des compétences et désirs, a mediator delegated by the Fondation de France to implement the Nouveaux commanditaires initiative in the Greater South, they approached artists Lucy + Jorge Orta to imagine an itinerary of works that would enable them to rediscover the Huveaune, from its source in the heights of the Provence mountains, to its mouth in the Mediterranean Sea.
The artists drew inspiration from the history of this coastal river, as well as from myths and legends associated with it, to create five sculptures, which are like benevolent fairies installed on the banks of the Huveaune, creating a path that stretches for some thirty kilometers.
