Description
Laundries came into being in the last quarter of the 19th century, with financial support from the French state (one-third of the work was funded by the national government, which wanted to curb plagues by encouraging all French town halls to improve public hygiene). Water had become a public health issue.
Laundries played this role to the full, until the arrival of drinking water in every home.
