1st Foreign Legion Regiment with the Command of the Foreign Legion (COMLE), the so-called "Mother House".
This expression, inherited from Sidi-Bel-Abbès, comes from the regiment's vital role in keeping traditions alive.
Created in 1841 and stationed at Aubagne since 1962, the 1er RE is the Legion's oldest regiment.
Beyond this historical aspect, the 1er RE represents the major step in a legionnaire's career. They begin their career here, at the selection and induction center, and return here at the end of their training.
The 1er Régiment Etranger represents the Foreign Legion through its Band, its Pioneers and its Képi Blanc newspaper. It also houses the Legion Museum and a Documentation Centre (historical archives).
Missions
The 1er RE is an essentially administrative regiment. Its main mission is to support the Foreign Legion and the Foreign Legion Command Staff (COMLE).
The 1st RE is the first stage in the life of a legionnaire, but also the last: at the end of their active service, legionnaires complete their departure formalities here.
