Located in Aubagne since 1962, the headquarters of the French Foreign Legion is today the administrative, historical and symbolic heart of this unique military institution. It houses the 1st Foreign Regiment (1er RE), the Foreign Legion Command and the Foreign Legion Recruitment Group. This name, inherited from Sidi-Bel-Abbès in Algeria, underlines the central role of this site in transmitting and preserving the traditions and spirit of the Legion.

The headquarters of the French Foreign Legion is a command centre, a training centre and a powerful symbol of legionnaire identity. It bears witness to the history of a unique military corps, made up of men from all over the world, united around shared values and a famous motto: “Honour and Loyalty”.

The 1st Foreign Regiment: a key passage for legionnaires

Created in 1841, the 1st Foreign Regiment is the Legion’s oldest regiment.

As well as its age, it plays an essential role in the career of legionnaires. It is here that recruits are selected and drafted, and it is also here that they return at the end of their training. The quartier Vienot is therefore an essential stage in the life of every legionnaire, between enlistment, training and integration.

The heritage of the Foreign Legion: music

Created in 1831, the Foreign Legion perpetuates a unique musical tradition with its emblematic instruments such as fifes and drums. Comprising around 65 musicians, it offers a varied repertoire of traditional military marches, opera arias, overtures and medleys. It performs regularly in France and abroad, giving almost 70 concerts a year.

Beyond its parent company, the Foreign Legion passes on its identity through events and commemorations. The best known is the Camerone Battle Ceremony, which takes place every year on 30 April.
