A simple tour to understand the history of the Legion

The tour follows a clear chronological thread, taking visitors back in time through a simple, elegant scenography. From the very first rooms, two eras and two moods stand out:

    • A deep red reveals the period 1831-1914, creating an intimate atmosphere that highlights the antique and exceptional military objects as well as the 19th-century works.
    • Grey and white tones for the more recent periods, marked by modern and industrial wars.
This visual contrast helps us to better understand the major historical developments.

Throughout the exhibition, mannequins represent the legionnaires in action. With no display case, they give an almost real presence and help to put the uniforms into context, as well as showing how they have changed over the years. The idea is simple: to show the soldier as he was, and not just as an object on display. A model of the famous Battle of Camerone is also on display, to help visitors understand how this battle, which has become the founding myth of the Foreign Legion, was fought.

Not to be missed!

The exhibition

30 Apr. 2026 > 3 Jan. 2027

Until 3 January 2027, the Musée de la Légion étrangère in Aubagne is hosting the temporary exhibition “La Noblesse de servir – Képi blanc et têtes couronnées”. Through a selection of rare objects, historical archives and remarkable artefacts, this exhibition reveals the little-known links between the Foreign Legion and the great royal and imperial dynasties around the world.

Understanding the life of legionnaires

After the historical section, there are themed areas to explore further. In particular, you’ll discover

    • The role of the legionnaires as builders, with a direct view of the war memorial
    • The everyday life of the soldiers, with a special focus on music and song, which are very much part of their culture
    • The unique legionary solidarity system

These rooms make the visit more concrete and provide a better understanding of the commitment of the men behind the uniform.

A place charged with emotion

The tour concludes with two particularly symbolic areas: the Hall of Honour, an essential part of a legionnaire’s journey, and the Crypt, an important place of remembrance, which marks the major stages of their military life. These two sites, along with the War Memorial, have been listed as Historic Monuments. The museum is considered to be a genuine place of remembrance, both for soldiers and for the general public.

The shop

Leave with a souvenir

Before you leave, take a look at the shop. You’ll find souvenirs, books… and even wine produced by former legionnaires on an estate in the Puyloubier countryside. Sales go directly to supporting mutual aid within the Legion.
