This Provençal heritage is a place of memories that retraces the whole of his life.

Marcel Pagnol, the artist who embodies Provence

Marcel Pagnol is a character who single-handedly represents thevery essence of Provence. Born in Aubagne in 1895, he is one of the best-known French writers, playwrights and film-makers of the XXᵉ century. Through his works such as La Gloire de mon père and Le Château de ma mère, he recounts his childhood, his family and his first emotions.

He gives a universal voice to the simple memories, sun-drenched hills and colourful characters that populate the midi. Visiting the house where he was born is like returning to the origins of his profoundly human and timeless works.

Another memory of Aubagne is playing boules under the plane trees on the Cours. My father, among other giants, would make prodigious leaps and throw an iron sledgehammer unimaginable distances.

The history of the house that became a museum

Marcel Pagnol’s birthplace is a 19thᵉ century bourgeois building located on Cours Barthélemy. It was here that the writer was born in 1895, before his family moved out a few years later.

For many years, this house remained private, but in 2003 it became a place of remembrance. Carefully restored, it was inaugurated that same year by the writer’s wife, Jacqueline Pagnol. Since then, it has welcomed visitors from all over the world to discover the roots of one of France’s greatest authors.

The Maison Natale de Marcel Pagnol is an integral part of Aubagne’s cultural heritage and an essential stop-off point for understanding the work and soul of Provence.

The dining room, the touching bedroom with the cradle, the kitchen where Augustine worked happily for the little family… He drew his first sticks on the dining room table, a child’s sketch of his future works, while Joseph corrected his students’ papers and Augustine sewed her men’s clothes under the golden light of the beautiful hanging lamp. Over the years, these rooms are inhabited by their presence, which is almost palpable, and they gently welcome us today.
